The days when the text based databases onced ruled the data storage industry have changed. Today databases have becomed more advanced. Now users will not only be able make their databases text based like sql. The other options that are available are the object oriented based databases, XML based databases, HTML based databases and the RTF based databases. These by definition are the new generation databases.
The object oriented database is one of the most well known new generation self contained databases there is around. In this database you will not only be able to keep text record but objects as well. This means that your database will be able to contain images, text, styled text, tables, programming components and etc. It can be self contained on a single machine or shared. The only drawback is the created file size which can be a little on the heavy side. This now not so much a problem due to compression technologies as well the advance of cheap disk space that is widely available.
The xml based database is similar to the normal text based sql databases. The only different is that the headers and organisation of the data in the database is more organized. The headers of the data that is represented in the xml database actually make the data more readable. A good point of the xml database is that any wrapper program for the database can be very easily coded.
The HTML based database is one of the best innovations to ever surface. This database basically uses standard html tags to contain the data of your database. Because the main foundation of this database is basically html, it can be read through a browser or through any wrapper program or parser that is able to parse html data. Now this type of database can contain styled text images, html tables, images and all other kinds of data formats that is allowable in html. Imagine a database that has bullets, tables and etc. It really makes everything really organized. The only drawback for this kind of databases is that everything is separated as hyperlinks such as normal created pages. The advantage is its extremely light weight and the ability to be updated through ftp or http by wrapper. The best in technology don't come any better than this.
The RTF (Rich Text Format) database is the kind of database that is also quite similar to the simple text based sql databases but with the difference that all data can be colour coded. There will be no images or tables but mainly suited for organisations that need their data to be color coded. The good thing about this type of databases is that it is virtually very light. The real advantage of this kind of database is that it not only can be opened using a special database wrapper program but with just any rtf text reader. the ease of the creation of such as database is also a real draw to consumers and business people alike.
It seems people not only want databases for simple text but something more like images and other kinds of objects. These new generation databases such as the html or rtf based ones has arrived and it has arrived with options for its users.
